Sometimes I sit back and reflect over the past couple of years and I’m truly astounded at how art has changed me and my whole life for the better. I’m over-brimming with gratitude that I have art in my life – to soothe, to calm, to unwind and to heal from.
But then again, when I think about the history of art and how rulers and religions have realised the power of art to ensure devotion, to understand important stories, or to spread propaganda – it’s really not that surprising.
Art is important because it changes the way we see, think and act. Here are some ways art can play an important role in your life.
How does Art affect you?
Looking at art can be a lot like reading a book. Art can take you back in time or send you off to imaginary places. Have you ever experienced this? If not, next time you look at a piece of art, ask yourself why you are connecting to it so much? Does it take you back to a childhood memory? Or do you get lost in the imagery and start thinking up stories around the subject?
This is when you know a piece of art has captured your heart.
Take a look at the painting on the right. It is one of my Wise Wild Wonderful Owls. What do you think her story is? Do the colours take you back in time? What about the tulips – do they remind you of special place? Be sure to tell me in the comments below.
How can Art Transform your Day
In ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne, Byrne talks about how our feelings are a direct result of our thoughts. Think happy thoughts, you feel happy. Think negative thoughts and you can’t help but feel low.
Art makes you think. If it makes you think, then it makes you feel. If it makes you feel then it can transform your day.
Do you walk past a piece of art at home and feel instantly different as a result? Maybe it makes you feel empowered. Maybe the colours uplift you. Or perhaps the subject makes you smile.
On the left is a piece of my art called Spring into Action. It is from my Big Bold Beautiful Bird Collection which invites you to:
- Think Big,
- Act Bold and ALWAYS
- Live your Beautiful life to the full.
Wake up to this painting every morning and you’d be ready to rock and roll throughout the day! You’d spring into action with renewed energy and with dreams ready to be realised!
Oprah knows it!
I recently found out that Oprah Winfrey has a 6 foot painting of an enslaved woman on the auction block, holding her daughter’s hand. Why?
Because while surrounded by all her opulence, she is reminded of where she comes from every day. She can’t enter or leave her mansion without seeing this painting. It keeps her grounded.
And that encapsulates the power of art at it’s highest.
