Crow Symbolism in Art

It’s time to dig deep into crow symbolism and how that has affected my art these past few months.

After being woken up by the insistent caws of a raucous bunch of crows right outside my bedroom window for a week or so, it was time to listen. The crows were calling me! Like all good artists, my curiosity was piqued and I wondered why…

Spiritual Meaning of Crows

For me, the spiritual meaning of crows is all about transformation. When I tune in to the caw-ing of crows and they become the soundtrack to my walks or my early evening read, I know it’s time for transformation.

And so it was! It was time to transform from a Wise, Wild, Wonderful owl artist to a Cool, Crafty, Curious crow artist! A new magical journey was about to begin!

magical crow painting - large black crow appears to break out of her colourful and abstract background of turquoise, purple, blue and cream. Red hearts float about her. Black and white legs give this crow a whimsical look.

Of course the transformation has not stopped there.  I’m stepping more and more into the role of a creativity guide and coach.

This is very exciting as I get to teach artists how to overcome their creative barriers so that they get to paint the art they love and dream about.

More on Crow Symbolism

Of course, crows don’t only symbolise transformation and I thought of 6 additional words that come to mind when I think of these mystical creatures. (I wanted 7 in all because 7 is a special number – the most used number that comes up in myths, fairy stories and the bible – I love this!)

Here is my word list: transformation, magic, resourcefulness, keen insight, speaking your truth, communication and mischief!

What do crows symbolise to you? If you’ve never considered this, next time you see or hear crows, think about my list and get curious. What message are they telling you? Animal wisdom is so fascinating and a great source of guidance.

Crow Paintings with Added Meaning

It’s no great surprise that all this crow symbolism informed this recent collection. Like all of my art, I wanted to create crow paintings with powerful messages so that when you invest in a piece you have a connection to it, both visually and emotionally.

I used flowers and colours in this series that emphasise the aspect of crow symbolism I was focusing on.

Take ‘Stay Connected’ for example. With this painting, I focused on the resourcefulness of crows and how we can be guided to become more independent and capable.

When we are connected to ourselves, others and the world around us, we trust we have all the resources we need within us. That’s when the magic begins! That’s when we start feeling comfortable in our own skin – who were are and who we are meant to be.

I added stylised King Protea flowers because these native flowers to South Africa are a symbol of resourcefulness. When we nourish ourselves, we allow others to bloom and flourish around us.

The pink represents good health and playfulness while the blue symbolises inspiration and intuition.

Highlight from my Crow Art Collection

Meet Queen Crow.  She is one of my favourites.  Her background is a combination of two things.  The sun and a patchwork landscape.

I imagined I was a crow circling above the land.  What would I see?  I would see different tones of green and yellow, grey and red.  A mixture of land and buildings and it would like a rich and luxurious blanket of beauty.

The sun is a symbol of the active energy she brings and it also doubles up as her crown.

She looks upon her queendom with servitude.  She gives more than she takes.

No flowers this time, but full of crow symbolism of magic, insight and resourcefulness.
